Great news! Erie mayor supports our cause

We believe it will take a village—or three—to preserve the rural land at 119th and Baseline as open space, and we’re getting tremendous support from Lafayette, Erie and Boulder County residents.

We now have over 1,000 signatures on our petition asking our local leaders to work as partners on acquiring this land as open space. We presented those signatures to the Lafayette City Council during their public hearing for the property’s annexation eligibility on May 20.

We also feel good about the letter we sent last month to the Boulder County commissioners, in which we shared the petition and asked them to partner with Lafayette and Erie to purchase the property as open space.

And now, Erie Mayor Andrew Moore has publicly released a statement pledging his support:

"As the mayor of Erie, it is essential to consider long-term implications in the decisions we make. Having an open space area between Erie and Lafayette is vital to provide a meaningful buffer between our municipalities and ensure that those who come after us can enjoy the open areas for centuries to come. I'll do what I can to lead Erie as a partner in this effort and look to the Boulder County Commissioners to take the lead in finding a way forward that is mutually beneficial for us all."

Mayor Andrew Moore, Town of Erie

As you can imagine, we’re super chuffed about this! We haven’t heard anything publicly from the Lafayette mayor and council in response, but we hope they’re on board as well.

Four of the seven Lafayette council seats are up for election in November, so now’s a great time to reach out and see what our representatives are thinking. While councilors can’t legally discuss development plans with the public outside of a public hearing, we believe there’s nothing prohibiting them from talking about annexation issues regarding this property—or their opinions on purchasing it as open space—with anyone at any time.

The bottom line is your voice really does matter! Here’s how to contact the Lafayette City Council, the Erie Town Council and the Boulder County Board of County Commissioners. The Lafayette City Council also has a booth at Art Night Out—the next one will be Friday, July 11, from 5–9 p.m. on Public Road.

And, as always, please reach out to us with any thoughts, ideas, comments or colorful musings, fellow villagers.

Way to show up for open space!

We asked and you delivered, BIG TIME. The city council chambers were literally standing room only for the May 20 annexation eligibility...
